Many women spend years in therapy before anyone asks the right question.
They may present with anxiety, depression, emotional dysregulation, relationship difficulties, executive functioning challenges, burnout, irritability, hopelessness, or even suicidal thoughts.
They may receive diagnoses such as generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, or ADHD.
Yet one important clinical question is often overlooked:
Do their symptoms worsen predictably throughout the menstrual cycle?
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a severe cyclical condition that can significantly impact mood, cognition, behavior, relationships, work, school performance, and overall quality of life. Despite its prevalence and clinical significance, PMDD remains underrecognized, misunderstood, and frequently misidentified in mental health settings.
As mental health professionals, we are uniquely positioned to recognize symptom patterns, improve assessment, support accurate diagnosis, and help clients access appropriate treatment and care.
In this 90-minute training, participants will gain a practical understanding of PMDD, learn how to differentiate it from PMS and Premenstrual Exacerbation (PME), and explore assessment, differential diagnosis, treatment, and referral considerations for clinical practice.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
Differentiate Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS), Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), and Premenstrual Exacerbation (PME), including diagnostic criteria, symptom presentation, and clinical considerations.
Identify common emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and physical symptoms associated with PMDD.
Utilize a PMDD-specific framework to assess and respond to suicidal ideation and suicide risk in clients with PMDD.
Describe evidence-informed treatment approaches, interdisciplinary collaboration, and clinical considerations for clients with PMDD, including co-occurring mental health conditions.
What Makes This Training Relevant?
PMDD is frequently misunderstood, underrecognized, and often mistaken for other mental health conditions.
Without awareness of PMDD and its cyclical nature, clinicians may overlook important assessment considerations, misinterpret symptom presentation, or miss opportunities for effective treatment planning and referral.
Greater understanding of PMDD can support more accurate case conceptualization, stronger interdisciplinary collaboration, and more effective support for women and girls experiencing cyclical distress.
Whether you're new to learning about PMDD or looking to strengthen your clinical understanding, this training will provide practical, evidence-informed information that can be immediately applied in clinical practice.
